MEDIATION supports UNEP PROVIA update of IPCC Guidelines
MEDIATION contributes to UNEP PROVIA update of IPCC Guidelines for the Assessment of Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation. UNEP established the Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA) as a global initiative which aims to provide direction and coherence at the international level for research on vulnerability, impacts and adaptation (VIA). One of its first activities is an update of the IPCC Guidelines for the Assessment of Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation that was published in 1994, and which was followed by additional guidance from UNEP and UNDP in the 1990s. Jochen Hinkel writes a section on the framing of the questions and approaches, based on the integrated methodology being developed for MEDIATION addressing the range of users, purposes and approaches in VIA. Other sections will address approaches, methods and tools, and the adaptation process. A survey of current guidance has been completed, and the first draft of revisions is expected to be completed by March 2012, to be followed by international review, then re-revision and publication by December 2012.
